Six Ways to Ease the Stress of Moving

Lots of adults can relate to the stresses of moving; 63% of adults have moved at least once in their lives, and the rest have never even left the towns in which they were born. The majority of people move to pursue a job or employment opportunity, so it can also be an exciting time in your life. If you’re planning a move, whether it’s across the country or just to the next county, here are a few tips to help you navigate the logistical nightmare of moving to a new home.

    1. Label your boxes
If you’re on a budget and you’re doing most of the heavy lifting yourself (literally…) it’s critical to know what’s in the boxes. This makes for easier and more efficient unpacking when you arrive at your new pad.

    2. Give yourself lots of time
It might seem like there’s not that much to be done, but starting to pack the day of or before your move will put you in a tricky spot that will result in you running out of time.

    3. Hire a storage and moving company
Before you get into business with anyone, make sure you check around and get some moving company quotes. If you find a local moving company you like, it can be incredibly helpful to have their help when you’re relocating. Moving company quotes should include options for both storing your things (if there’s a delay between your move-out and move-in dates) and moving them from your old home and to your new one.

    4. Make plans for fragile items
Don’t forget to make special plans for anything that holds a special place in your heart (or in your wallet). This is important for:

    • Sentimentally valuable items, such as jewelry or family heirlooms
    • Breakables, like bottles of wine or fragile art
    • Expensive items
    • Perishables (e.g. plants)

    5. Find someone to watch the kids and pets
Depending on the age of children, it can make things much more complicated to have them around on moving day. It can be tricky to find a sitter if you’re planning a long-distance move, so make sure to think ahead about how to transport not only your belongings, but all family members to the new home.

    6. Clean your house
Why would you clean the house when you’re leaving anyway? Packing is a lot easier when you’re working with a clean space. Think dirty dishes, laundry, and general clutter — it’s much easier to pack everything away if these messes aren’t in the way.

Do you have any suggestions on how to ease the stress of moving? Do you think it’s helpful to talk to storage and moving companies and get moving company quotes to help with the big day?
