Difference Between a Technician and a Mechanic

The terms mechanic and technician are often used interchangeably. However, there are significant differences between the two professions.

A key difference between mechanics and technicians is that mechanics specialize in more hands-on work and automotive technicians focus more on the maintenance aspect. Mechanics are more focused on automobiles, vehicles, and heavy machinery, whereas technicians have a relatively larger domain. For example, a bmw mechanic would do work like changing oil and brake pads while bmw technicians would deal with more identification of drivability complaints. Both professions have skilled tradespeople who have excellent knowledge in their field.

Technicians usually work with complex computer systems while mechanics diagnose and repair using tools like hammers, drills, pliers, etc. Mechanics have a more labor-based skillset, and technicians have a relatively more intellectual-based skillset. However, both areas overlap and one person can be skilled in both. The technology in our cars is always changing, so the role of both technicians and mechanics is vital. Both are equally important parts of society and functioning in this day and age without them is impossible.
