3 Realities of Auto Repair and Maintenance
Owning a car is a great accomplishment and a great goal for many people to have. It allows you to transport yourself from work, school, or on personal trips without having to worry about stuff like public transit. Owning a vehicle has negatives of its own however. Auto repair and maintenance can be an extremely expensive endeavor. Overall, auto repair costs in the U.S. is estimated to be $58 billion annually. If you just bought a car don’t let this get you down though. Just keep these few things in mind as you travel down the road of life.
1.) No Ones Safe: For better or worse auto maintenance and repair is indiscriminate. No matter your age, sex, race, or creed you have just as good a chance as the next person to be in need of auto repair quotes sooner or later. About 80% of all auto repair and maintenance has to do with durability, and you can improve your odds by the vehicle you buy and how you treat it regularly. In the end, it doesn’t even matter. No car is built to last forever.
2.) Problems can be Big and Small: From transmission failure to a scheduled oil change, auto repair and maintenance can vary greatly. For most cars you should have the tires rotated about every 7,500 miles and an oil change every 5,000. These things can be taken care of for as little as $20-$50. On the other hand something such as a seized transmission can run you thousands of dollars.
3.) Ignoring it Wont Make it Go Away: Unfortunately auto repair and maintenance is not like the annoying neighbor kid that used to come around. It will not just go away if you ignore it for long enough. People seem to still be confused by this though as 10% of drivers have a check engine light on at any time, and 50% of them will cover their eyes to such a light for over three months. This could contribute to the 12% of car accidents caused by mechanical failures.
Just like owning a home, a car can be an exciting and rewarding experience. But also like a house it requires a great deal of attention, and at times money. While it is important to chop around for the best deals when performing auto repair and maintenance, you must also recognize there are certain aspects of owning a car that will not ever really change.
